INTRODUCTION

It is my intention that this book will not only expand your knowledge and skill of carving golf balls but inspire you to create your own masterpieces. Hopefully it will help you find as much pleasure and fulfillment as I do from this unique carving experience that gives new life to old balls.

In an effort to accomplish this, I have provided pictures of more than 200 carvings (including some “starter” projects), suggestions for discovering new project ideas and two step-by-step projects. You will find instructions for removing the cover, hints on painting completed projects, a new and easy way to perform a modified method of chip carving, and even a procedure for installing a golf ball carving into a small mouth bottle. At the back of this book is a listing of approximately 735 makes and models of golf balls giving properties such as core color and ease or difficulty of carving.   View a sample of some golf ball properties. Some other topics are presented as a matter of interest or in an effort to cover related aspects of the subject.
While specific patterns are not presented, you are free to duplicate any carvings pictured.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tom Rhodes and his wife Kay live on the Rappahannock River near Warsaw, Virginia, a small town in the “Northern Neck”. He first became interested in carving while a Cub Scout over 60 years ago. Now his broad range of carvings include toothpick chains, cottonwood bark houses, wood spirit walking sticks, larger than life heads (and animals) in living trees, as well as birds, reptiles, mammals, ships in bottles and much more.

Tom started carving golf balls in 2001 and after nearly a thousand projects, he still never runs out of ideas for new and interesting creations. He shares his knowledge by teaching classes and now provides you insight of this somewhat addictive art form.
